The information revolution has created a generation of educators and students acutely aware of enlightened learning/teaching environments. Architects, designers and builders are beneficiaries of the desire to develop healthy stimulating study environments. Demonstration by example is the best starting point and secondary schools such as Victoria’s Assumption College at Kilmore are a case in point.

Raise Your Glasses
Established in 1862, the General Havelock Hotel has undergone a few facelifts during its lifetime. In the 1930s, like many establishments of its era, the bluestone Victorian hotel was made over with an Art Deco theme. Some 80 years later, it was the discovery of several of these long forgotten Art Deco jewels that inspired the direction of the hotel’s latest refurbishment.

Sam Crawford is winner of Viridian’s 2010 Vision Award for Best Residential Interiors use of glass. Sam’s refurbishment of a Newtown terrace in inner Sydney may appear mild at first glance, but is wild at heart in the way it invents light and space throughout the body of the structure.

High visibility goes a long way towards claiming top perch and BMW Adelaide’s busy West Terrace showroom is a high profile example of just how a prestige vehicle dealership recognises the role design plays in product appeal. A dynamic glass façade cleverly brings out the best in the vehicles on display. Aurecon’s lead designer and engineer Niko Tsoukalas has created a suitably innovative engineering solution for the German marque.

Aesop Fables
Melbourne based design studio, Ryan Russell was recently named as the winner of Viridian’s 2010 Vision Award for Creative Use of Glass in an Interior Application – Commercial, for its design of Aesop Chatswood. Located in an inner Sydney shopping centre, Chatswood Chase, Aesop sells premium quality skincare products made from the best scientific and botanical ingredients. Aesop Chatswood is the third Aesop store that Ryan Russell has designed. While each store is instantly identifiable as part of the Aesop group, they also have their own individual characteristics.

Dead Still
Viridian was a key collaborator and supporter of one of this year’s major showings Titled NEW010, at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) in Melbourne. The company provided specialist technical and material support for two of the contributing artists. The exhibition initiative by Nexus Designs and ACCA, explores the relationship between art, design and architecture. Viridian’s support is represented in two of the seven exhibits, Louise Hubbard’s ‘Dead Still’ and Fiona Connor’s ‘What You Bring with You to Work’.
